Tomorrow is Crazy Day in Cleveland with markets and a Council Meeting

Tomorrow is the Ekka holiday for Brisbane folk. If anyone is looking for an alternative to the Ekka’s crowds they can visit Cleveland for Crazy Day.

The Cleveland Markets will be operating tomorrow in Bloomfield Street from 9:00am to 2:00pm. There will be live entertainments, market stalls and food. More information is available in this Bulletin story and on the Cleveland Markets Facebook page.

Crazy Day Council meeting

But wait….there’s more.

While visiting the Cleveland Markets you can also observe the Redland City Council’s Crazy Day meeting which starts at 9:30am and typically runs for an hour or two.

The last time Redland City Council had a Crazy Day meeting was in 2016.

At that meeting the Council gave development approval for the Chefs Inc. foodmarket to operate in the Cleveland Library. This project was a monumental failure, described quite fully by Redlands2030 in: Open for business closed for winter: Chefs Inc.

The 2016 Crazy Day council meeting also ticked off Council’s support for a grand plan to redevelop the Cleveland Aquatic Centre (swimming pool) into a surf lifesaving centre of excellence, with promises of hundreds of local jobs. This grand plan was recently abandoned by the Council.

So what will Redland City Councillors do on Crazy Day 2019?

There’s not much on the meeting agenda. Apart from some routine monthly reports councillors will have the opportunity to discuss a report on the Audit Committee’s most recent meeting. There’s also a report recommending approval of a list of sole suppliers.

In closed session (without media or public present) councillors will discuss an item of business called “Smart City Joint Development Project”.

Toondah Harbour project in Public Participation

The Council allows members of the community to discuss matters of public interest at every general meeting. At the Crazy Day council meeting tomorrow, representatives of Birdlife Australia will be discussing the community’s views on plans for construction of 3,600 apartments on migratory shorebird habit next to Toondah Harbour.

What’s not on the Council’s Crazy Day agenda?

One item of great public interest which appears to be overdue for discussion by councillors is the Council’s community satisfaction survey of 600 Redlands residents. Just 19% of respondents said that council was doing a good job of managing growth and development Information according to a Redland City Bulletin story published on 25 July 2019.

We understand that in doing the community satisfaction survey, Council obtained strong negative feedback from Cleveland residents about the proposed Toondah Harbour project. When will this data be made publicly available?

Attending the Crazy Day Council meeting

Redland City Council meetings are held in the Council Chambers on the first floor of the Council’s offices, on the corner of Bloomfield Street and Middle Street in Cleveland.

Members of the public can observe proceedings from the public gallery.

The meeting commences at 9:30am. Here is a link to the agenda.
