Walk for Toondah in Middle Street
The Walk for Toondah heading up Middle Street, Cleveland

The Walk for Toondah, concerns about an Olympic games venue on the Birkdale lands and the financial pain of being a Redlands ratepayer are discussed in letters to Redlands2030.

Walk for Toondah was inspiring

The Walk for Toondah

The Toondah Harbour protest walk was inspirational and something which should make us all think about decisions to develop in Moreton Bay and other places like this!

The Toondah PDA is not only seen as the dumbest decision, but extremely concerning on a Ramsar protected wetland.

Building 3,600 units  will not only destroy a wildlife habitat but the way of life for people living in Cleveland as hundreds of extra cars will join an already overloaded highway. With the election upon us, deciding who to vote for is crucial to the future of our environment.

Trashing wetlands is not acceptable and maintaining  wetlands is one way of decreasing the impact of climate change.

This monstrosity of a development must be stopped and voters can have an impact by voting for Toondah.

Toondah Walk in Redland City Bulletin

Walk for Toondah in the Redland City Bulletin
Walk for Toondah in the Redland City Bulletin on 11 May 2022

I want to thank the Editor of the Redland City Bulletin for the coverage of the Walk for Toondah event on Sunday 8 May.

I wish to point out that this was not just “Environmental groups” walking but we ordinary citizens who came from near and far to support the people of Cleveland who are concerned about the ongoing threat to their homes from this proposed development.

The proposal for 3,600 new dwellings on reclaimed land, that is protected by the international Ramsar agreement to which Australia is a signatory, impacts the whole of SEQ from mountains to mangroves.

Which other international agreements are not adhered to?

It’s hard to believe this is still an issue when Federal Environment Department advice years ago clearly stated it was an unacceptable development, but it was overridden.

I worry about the future of our beautiful country when democratic principles are ignored for political or personal gain.

Toondah explained by Redlands2030

St Paul’s Church recently hosted Redlands2030 at the monthly car boot market

I was pleased to catch up with the team from Redlands2030 at the St Paul’s Church car- boot market last month.

They were certainly well informed about the progress of the Toondah Harbour PDA development.

After our discussion I sat in the shade of the Church looking out at the tranquil area of parkland and the Bay. I wondered would this view  soon  be mainly obscured by 10 story buildings with 3,600 units?

Various questions came to mind including matters like:

  • Will the parking places remain for St Paul’s congregation or will they be taken by the visitors or residents of the proposed development?
  • If the road by the side of the old  Church is enlarged, will the parking places be removed?
  • The current road by the side of the old Church, will it become a  highway into the so called development, hence the few parking places will be in danger?
  • If the “tourist fun park‘’ is built will the Church parking places be taken by visitors?
  • Will permits be required to secure parking for the congregations of the Church?
  • What will happen with parking for weddings and funerals?

While these are just my thoughts, they are issues that seem not to have been addressed in the planning.

Have our local politicians got answers to these and the myriad other question that came to me while enjoying the shade? To date it appears not.

As I chewed over the matters that came to mind I concluded that we are better served by Redlands2030 than our local politicians, as far as questions about Toondah are concerned.

Will Olympics boss review whitewater site?

Deodoro Olympic Whitewater Stadium used for 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics

I hope Andrew Liveris, the new Brisbane Olympic 2032 boss understands community concerns about the story line that after the Games there will be no net costs to the residents of SEQ.

Many citizens believe that the Brisbane Olympic Games will have an extremely negative impact on our City, our environment and our quality of life.

Predictably, housing prices and homelessness have appreciably climbed already, at least in part as a result of the ‘Games’ announcement, and population numbers spiking.

The scam being played out on the Redlands community about the White Water facility is an early test of the competence of Mr Liveris’s new committee.

A transparent assessment would be a breath of fresh air.

Paying RCC rates really hurts

There will be no public participation at the council meeting on 21 April
Redland City Council’s offices in Bloomfield Street

I recently visited the Redland City Council offices in Cleveland to pay my rates.

I came out much poorer as the rates have increased and I was told they would go up with the new valuation.

I was also told that Raby Bay was in trouble again with all the rain as it was sinking and a lot of work was required on it.

Will Toondah suffer from sinking???  With resumed soil, it needs years of settlement.

Re Birkdale land where RCC & State govt politicians surprised us with plan to build a White Water Facility for 2032 Olympics, rather than a place, as Redland citizens thought, for everyone of all age groups to enjoy visiting to escape for a moment in time from a built, polluted environment surrounded by a concrete jungle, with another surprise by prolific builder Fiteni & Co bulldozing dozens of roadside trees on acres of land with unreadable sign in front opposite Willard farm built mid-1800s Heritage Council have at long last had State government listed on Old Cleveland Rd East. Traffic banked up from 4-way intersection to this point in a.m. peak hour…yet Council allows dozens new dwellings knowing we are all dependent on personal transport where road crashes will worsen as traffic congestion increases. When will it stop! And now Mayor & followers want to fill the Birkdale land with structures of all kinds to fill it up leaving no room for walking trails, wildlife, + haven for koalas? Seems Redlands mayor determined to use her power to undo the heritage listed Willard Farmhouse & surrounds on the former Federal government controlled Commonwealth land and fill it…her way!..

If the White Water Facility at Birkdale is fully funded by the State, Federal or Olympic Committee, including access, and the State agrees to support maintenance thereafter, then there is no opposition from me. There is no reason Redlands rates should be used.
