voters expectations

To encourage discussion about things that matter to you, Redlands2030 is doing an online poll to find out voters’ expectations of the mayor and councillors elected to serve Redland City residents at the elections on 16 March.

UPDATE – Here are the poll results

voters' expections

This is an opt in poll which means that its findings will reflect the views of people who respond. It may not accurately reflect the voters’ expectations of the whole community in the same way that a scientifically valid survey can do.

The poll includes some suggestions, and people can respond by selecting up to six options including the “Other” response where you can include what you think is important.

We aim to report on the poll findings before the commencement of early voting on 4th March 2024.

Who does what

Voters' expectations may include a good wheelie bins service.
Local councils collect rubbish

We recently published on our Facebook page a simple but not exhaustive guide to help people understand the sort of things that local councils do, and the things which are the job of the State and/or Federal Governments.

Redland City Council Responsibilities

  • Mow grass in parks and on footpaths
  • Mosquito control
  • Parks, sports fields, and public swimming pools
  • Libraries, art galleries, and community halls
  • Animal management including dog laws
  • Improve and maintain local roads and footpaths
  • Collect rubbish from wheelie bins and manage tips
  • Water supply and sewerage
  • City Plan, rezoning, and development approvals
  • Respond to lawful Native Title claims
  • Set and collect rates and charges

State / Federal Government Responsibilities

  • Street crime, other crime, policing, courts, and prisons
  • Our hospital, other hospitals, and health services
  • Congestion, state roads, and rail services
  • Cost of living and economic management
  • Social housing, social services, NDIS, pensions
  • Education: schools, TAFE, tertiary studies
  • Immigration, border control and biosecurity
  • Environmental regulation
  • Climate change policies
  • Communications regulation
  • Defence and foreign affairs
  • Pass laws that recognize Native Title
  • Taxation

There is a bit of overlap in some areas. For example, Redland City Council and the State Government have jointly funded the upgrade of ferry terminals for the southern Moreton Bay islands (SMBI).

Significant planning issues can involve both Redland City Council and the State Government.

One of the biggest issues we face in the Redlands is Native title claim over the community assets/facilities, these belong to all Redlanders not an entitled few. We need a mayor and councillors that are prepared to fight this issue.

I am in my 80’s and have lived in many council areas, mostly in NSW. This must be the best council area I have lived in. Generally well maintained roads, clean well kept parks and kerbs. All this costs money so the higher rates are probably justified. It is not an affordable area for many people.

Current and planned road up grades for buses and parents trying to get their kids to and from school has become a logistical time consuming nightmare. Road up grades need to come first and then the housing development.

STOP THE OLYMPIC GAMES. There should’ve been a referendum on this huge issue, not just dumped on Qld by the former Premier. She had no right to inflict this on Brisbane. Then she resigns and leaves disaster in her wake
