The lack of real choice offered by the two major political parties, broken promises about protection of wetlands, and dismay at Redland City Council’s high rates are discussed in letters to Redlands2030.

A pox on the ALP/LNP duopoly

Dear Editor

It is so disappointing to see the main contenders for upcoming State elections locked into the debacle that is the Toondah Harbour Priority Development Area (PDA).

For the existing and aspiring Labor/LNP candidates to continue to foist the mega-residential development upon Redlanders is an insult to our intelligence. In so doing they ignore public opinion, community values, planning evidence, economic realities, planning conventions and future generations.

Of course, the choice now is between the Party (LNP) that foisted the PDA process on an unsuspecting community and the Party (ALP) that promised to right the wrong, and didn’t.

The LNPs PDA legislation was about imposing development on communities without regard to community values or long-standing rights of appeal by aggrieved communities…it was a nothing more than action to appease the developers.

Labor’s actions and the response was to ignore their own promise to revoke the legislation and then (even worse) they supercharged the developers yield by about 450%. A scale of development that was never mentioned in the totally inadequate consultation phase.

In all, Redlanders, and especially voters in Oodgeroo are presented with a Hobson’s choice between the major parties, it’s Tweedledum v Tweedledee!

So, let’s send a message to both parties, Toondah is “a pox on both”!

Promises, promises!

Editor

The Toondah Harbour project should not be built on Ramsar wetland.

In addition to the many ecological justifications (including the wellbeing of the curlew population), Australia’s national reputation is at stake.

Moreton Bay is listed as a protected area under the Ramsar Convention. We asked to protect it. We drew the map (which includes areas on which Walker Group wants to build). We promised the international community we would protect the ecological character of the area. To breach that promise in disregard of our international obligations would be an embarrassment.

Breaking promises is un-Australian. Protect Australia’s reputation and stop the Toondah Harbour project’s encroachment on protected areas.

Rates and waste

I feel a rate increase at this time with so many families struggling with Covid, working fewer hours, job insecurity and mortgage stress was a cruel and thoughtless. Redland City Council showed no compassion when deciding to increase our rates.

It would have been more productive to look at wastage in the field.
For example, the street sweeper truck swept MAIN ROAD WELLINGTON POINT twice on one week (13th August and 14th August)!
What is going on?

Fix (no replace) the broken Queensland planning system

Have you seen the petition being promulgated by Michael Berkman MP the Member for Maiwar.

His petition calls for a root and branch review of Queensland’s planning laws to enable local democracy and put people ahead of developer profits.

Proposed reforms include no development in flood-prone areas, to account for long-term implications of climate change.

This petition can be found on Mr Berkmans web site, and it is to be hoped more people sign it and more local MPs support it.

Another interesting range of issues and views. It is good to see the ALP/LNP duopoly called out and they well deserve a pox on both their houses. neither has been shown to be community focussed as they both race to avoid any comment about Toondah…history will judge them poorly. The letter with the Planning petition is deserving of support, but that is another sweetheart deal between the LNP?ALP!!!
