Redlands residents write this week about the controversial plans for residential development on the Ramsar wetlands next to Toondah Harbour.
Also, a question is raised about littering when advertising material is tossed onto footpaths.
The Toondah Albatross
It would seem to me , and I guess to anyone taking a fleeting interest in what’s going on in this beautiful neck of the Bay, that the main mouthpiece proponents of the terrible Toondah Harbour proposal are;
- Mayor Williams
- Councillor Peter Mitchell
- Andrew Laming
They should be very concerned. My local barber tells me he has done his own informal survey on his customers views about Toondah and he reckons its at least 80% against!
His survey is self admittedly not very scientific, but would it be much less scientific than Andrew Laming’s famously suspect surveys? I doubt it.
So, if I were a local Federal Member seeking re election within 6 months, or indeed a Councillor seeking to be returned in a year or so I would be much more cautious about who and what I support.
If these 3 are unable to sniff the breeze that’s billowing through the area then I would suggest they should consider looking at back up employment opportunities.
We know they have little concern for the endangered Eastern Curlew but they should be worried about the Toondah Albatross they will each carry into their respective elections.

Advertising litter
If I am seen by a council officer throwing paper on the street, I can be fined. Also, if I am seen to be driving, with a limb out of the car window, I would be in trouble with the police.
How then is it allowable, for large amounts of advertising material, thrown over the tops of the vehicles, onto the footpath in every street in the Redlands.
Complaints are answered, advising that Council can take no action against the perpetrator. They a suggest, that you get in touch with the organisation that sets the standards for advertising.
Council, in their letter, asks you to advise the Council of any response you receive. That’s easy because the response is zilch.
Are their any other ratepayers out there who resent this blatant littering of the shire?

Murky facts in Toondah Harbour story
The recent ABC investigation on the Toondah Harbour proposal revealed some murky facts about what goes on behind government doors. Both the State and Federal government were the recipients of donations from big time developer Walker Group.
The investigation revealed through confidential reports that Federal Minister Josh Frydenberg chose to ignore advice from his department that the development proposal was “clearly unacceptable” and gave the green light to progress it to the next stage of assessment.
For reasons not yet revealed, the State Government are also staunch supporters.
Apart from the fact that the development proposal will destroy a RAMSAR listed wetland and see 10 storey high rise buildings containing 3,600 units built in Moreton Bay, the question must be asked:
Should any government or council have the right to give away 50 hectares of highly protected Moreton Bay Marine Park to one of the wealthiest men in Australia?
I think most would agree that the answer is a resounding ‘NO’.

Please don’t delete my comments ?? My neighbours husband works as a painter and is currently at work at the blue behemoth between Cleveland and toondah harbour. This disgrace which our voted for council has allowed to be erected where once koala food trees grew, IS part of the redevelopment!!! Please everyone drive middle street and have a look !!!! Disgrace!!!!!
Re “Advertising Material”. I assume you are referring to the local paper, however, we enjoy reading the local news and other articles including the crossword. We walk regularly and see very few papers left on verges and is it not unreasonable to expect residents to pick up the paper even if they don’t want it and place it in the recycle bin. What we object to is the lack of clean up done by this council. Here it is Christmas eve and the verges have not been mowed and don’t give me bunkum re bad weather. Look around at private resident and business properties; they are tidied up in preparation for Christmas. If my 73 year old husband can mow a 1600 sqm block regularly surely the council can spend our money on what it should be used for ie beautifying the city not turn it into a high rise blight on the horizon.
Some of you have heard about the “Game of Mates.” In fact Cameron Murray and Paul Frijters have written a book entitled “Game of Mates – how favours bleed the nation.” Many of us are aware that this game of mates has been playing out in the Redlands between certain politicians and councillors. The article above by PH of Cleveland names just three of them. In fact Cr Peter Mitchell has placed his council stall right beside the Walker Corporation stall, both strongly advocating that a commercial development of 3,600 units be installed where we currently have a healthy wetland population of shore birds and other wildlife. The Mayor also supports Walker Group yet no one has investigated the extent of the environmental destruction or even the infrastructure that would place a burden on our already congested roads. Even Andrew Laming admits that the impact on our roads would be for at least 20 years yet his brochures placed in the letterboxes of residents illustrates that he is neither “rigorous” nor “independent.” He bragged in one newsletter that he was advising the then Environment Minister, Josh Frydenberg. That now appears obvious because Frydenberg ignored the advice of his own environmental committee. I doubt the Mayor will contest the next council election because she now knows she is on the nose.
