My grandchildren will miss out

Ramsar wetlands next to Toondah Harbour

What a shame that Josh Frydenberg signed off on a potentially disastrous project as environmental minister.

A quick signature has the potential to change RAMSAR protected wildlife to an overdeveloped environmental catastrophe.

Read up on the proposed Toondah Harbour development. Its not just a boardwalk but a plan for 3,600 units in the bay.

Koala numbers are declining, mangroves are essential for the breeding ground of many fish species and shorebirds need places to feed and rest.

One has to ask how a developer can get the go-ahead to trash this pristine area.

Let’s  keep this area preserved for  future generations. To think my grandchildren will miss out on this because some developer sees dollars signs is a nightmare

Who will really pay for Toondah Harbour?

Toondah Harbour
View over the site proposed for 3,600 apartments

I note in this weeks Redland City Bulletin that Walker Group, developers of Toondah Harbour, have spent more money on spin, showing a lovely park in a half-page advertisement.

Shame they are not honest and show the 10 story buildings they plan to build on 100 acres of fill in our Marine Park and on a Ramsar site.  I meet with a representative from Walkers a few months ago.

Firstly, I was surprised he suggested we meet in the conference room paid for by the ratepayers, when do developers get access to Council conference facilities?

Secondly, I asked how he could justify Toondah Harbour development is going to be a great tourism attraction, he told me that people will come from Brisbane to see the buildings.  I thought at the time, REALLY! when people can go to West End, South Brisbane, Coorparoo and see the same ugly buildings.

How can they justify easy and efficient bay connection, when people will still use the ferry terminal which should be upgraded by Council and the State similar to what they did at Coochie, Russell and Lamb Islands recently.

I guess this was part of the confidential deal?

More retail and dining precinct, bet similar businesses in Cleveland CBD were keen to hear that, as they struggle now.

Ah! the Southbank Lagoon, so after they accommodate up to 10,000 people to live in  3600 units, patrons of a hotel and other uses, those using the Lagoon, may have to park up near the train station, as after this much development is pushed into this space there will be very few spots to park.

This area of Cleveland already has major car parking issues for those using Straddie Ferries now.  Many people ask how much money Walker Group is paying for the use of public owned Moreton Bay Marine Park, instead of paying money to buy land like normal developers.     No free lunch!

Toondah Saviour? Biased reporting

I was upset to see the front page of a recent edition of our local paper headlined as ‘Toondah Saviour’ .

About five columns were dedicated to promoting the Toondah Harbour Project.

Hardly unbiased reporting and pretty sure the local wildlife won’t find the proposed development to be any kind of ‘saviour’.

I was quite disgusted.

Who does this development benefit? How much longer can we keep trashing the natural environment? What will future generations think of our short sighted race concrete every thing so a few can have a more dollars? How can we justify ignoring an international treaty we signed on the world stage to protect this essential feeding ground for migrating birds? Does not say much for our integrity as a nation.

Would, could, Federal government reject building 10-storey apt bldgs. on Toondah Harbour site for 3,600 units when original agreement was for 800? And Josh Frydenberg, Treasurer, for short time he wore Environment Minister’s hat, accepted by billionaire developer Lang Walker, a generous donation to approve it? Decisions already made? And what of Redland Mayor Williams’ suggestion if approved, to invite Lang Walker to dig up ex-Commonwealth land, Birkdale…land intended for people of all age groups? Premier was quick to mention on TV that we would see white water rafting …what other projects are in the pipeline decided in workshops?

Please allow me to be selfish for a moment. Forget for the moment the annihilation of an environment that has evolved to nourish and support life. Life that enriches our own lives simply by being there, being there forever before we were and being there forever when we are not.
How will we cope with the traffic ? How will we relieve our stress in the mess replaces the places we go to escape the mess we make. How will my life be enriched ? How will my life be nourished ? How will l live here ?
