Raising Redlands issues in State Parliament this week were Kim Richards (Labor), Don Brown (Labor) and Mark Robinson (LNP).

Redlands MPs spoke In State Parliament this week about the State Government’s plans for a new jetty at Dunwich, lack of public participation at Redland City Council’s meetings and the Federal MP for Bowman Andrew Laming.

Goompi (Dunwich) Master Plan and new jetty design

Mark Robinson speaking in Queensland Parliament on 22 April 2021.

Concerns about the size and usefulness of a new jetty to be built in Dunwich (Goompi) were raised in State Parliament this week by Oodgeroo MP Mark Robinson.

Following the presentation of a petition to State Parliament about saving Dunwich’s Harold Water Jetty from being demolished, the State Government announced that it would allocate $750,000 to construction of a new jetty.

“Straddie people power does sometimes make bad governments listen and change their decisions” said Dr Robinson.

But it seems that the Straddie community is not convinced that $750,000 will be sufficient to construct a really useful jetty, a jetty that will do justice to the memory of Harold Walker.

“Will the replacement jetty be like for like, the same size and with the same capacity for use? Will it allow for fishing, boating and sea rescue capacity as it has in years past or will it be a smaller fishing platform only”? said Dr Robinson.

Dr Robinson also called for the State Government to make the Goompi (Dunwich) Master Plan public as soon as possible and to allow for proper consultation with people being able to see how the new jetty fits into plans for Dunwich Harbour.

Bring back public participation at Council meetings

Don Brown (Labor - Capalaba) speaking in Queensland Parliament on 20 April 2021.

Redland City Council’s failure to let residents raise matters of concern at Council meetings was raised by Capalaba MP Don Brown during debate of the COVID-19 Emergency Response and Other Legislation Amendment Bill.

This legislation allows for local council meetings to be closed to the public if there are valid concerns about public health safety during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“I say to the Redland City Council: come up with a COVID safe plan and the ability for residents to address the council at council meetings in a COVID safe way” said Mr Brown.
