Stradbroke Flyer “Calypso” passing mangroves at the entrance to Toondah Harbour

Residents write about the Toondah mega residential development (stridently, and satirically) as well as questioning the Labor Party’s commitment to its published policies.

If you have something to say we would like to hear from you.

Lets get some really big development

Is this a suitable area for development?
Mt Cotton

Several recent correspondents to our local paper have suggested that, rather than criticise the Toondah Harbour project, we should be embracing this type of development in the interests of population growth and jobs.

One correspondent even suggests that the 10 storey limit for Toondah should be increased to 20 storeys!

I have a better idea!

Many Redlanders may not realise that we have nearby a site that provides magnificent views east across the Bay and to the mountains west as far as the eyes can see on a clear day.

At the moment access is very restricted and you might need permission from one prominent land owner in particular in order to access the track to the top. I would encourage you to investigate this site for yourself .You will be rewarded with views to die for.

This site is, of course, Mount Cotton. The top of Mount Cotton.

I can envisage a development atop this majestic peak that would bring people and dollars to this region. Oh, and ,of course, jobs jobs and more jobs.
I suggest the Mayor could immediately lobby the State Government to seek a Priority Development Application so that this spot can be developed to its true potential without interference from those pesky environmentalists and Redlands 2030 naysayers.

The site could accommodate , I don’t know-say 3 600 units, but this would mean at least 10 stories for most of the area available. It shouldn’t pose a problem for a creative Council.

The Mountain is a Koala Conservation Area, and it is adjacent to the Venman Bushland National Park, but these small issues can be easily overcome . The Toondah PDA precedent will allow Council to easily bypass these minor obstacles. No consultation is required, no objections countenanced. Not even from those already living nearby on the side of the mount.

As for access for the likely 10 000 residents, Mount View Road is close by and could surely accommodate greater traffic numbers without the need for any upgrade. In any event, if Andrew Laming is correct about Toondah, these new occupants would be part of the digital economy and not likely to need to leave home to travel to work.

Come on Councillors, this is a great opportunity. Lets get cracking!

Does ALP Policy mean anything?

As public attention and media coverage about Toondah grows more and more people are examine how the plans came about. In that time the weakness of the State Governments policy position has become more apparent.  The Ramsar nomination of Moreton Bay was a signature decision by the Goss Government back in 1993.

And so the words by Abraham Lincoln, begin to bear fruit:

You can fool all of the people some of the time

You can fool all of the people all of the time

But you can’t fool all of the people all of the time

Community views and the opposition to the mega Toondah development are not only firming …. but are becoming more and more strident. It is to be hoped the Premier (and Mayor Williams) both realise that fewer and fewer people are being fooled for any of the time!

ALP policy commitments (in 2017 and again at the National Conference last year are clear. Sadly policy abuse by an elected Labor Government isn’t new …. but people expect better!

Dear Premier, stop Toondah!

I asked the Premier to please withdraw her Government’s support for the Toondah PDA. I used the pro forma letter by Redlands2030 but I wrote this to her not from an orchestrated email push, but from a long term Redland resident with commitment to preserve those important, indeed irreplaceable, features of significance.

Those areas which cannot be replicated … as to offsets… don’t even consider them!

I told the Premier she has an opportunity to really make a stand for the people and our values, just as some previous political leaders have.  I hope she listens.

Finally I asked her to remember, that “we still have the Franklin!”

Let’s hope that the Queensland Premier and the Mayor for Redland City Council start to act in the best interests of the people who elected them because the flawed Walker Proposal for Toondah Harbour does not even pass the pub test. We need elected officials who work for the best interests of the people they serve, not for commercial development proposals that fly in the face of stated Labor Environment Policy. Currently roads and infrastructure in the Redlands are lagging well behind medium and high density housing development yet certain elected officials are supporting more commercial development in inappropriate areas.
