The destruction of koala habitat at Cowley Street has really touched a nerve among people. This week’s views include opinions from Italy and Germany. This issue has put Redland City on the map…internationally… for all the wrong reasons.

A counter opinion was raised about the rights of the land owner, perhaps this perspective shines a light on the extended delays among councillors and even MPs to do anything, to protect the area.

Local residents and concerned citizens have a chance to shine a light on the plight of koalas by joining the OB (outside broadcast) by the ABC radio on Thursday at Raby Bay Park (5am to 8:30am) and then joining the ABC crew at Capalaba Community Centre from 8:30 until about 6pm.

Witnessing Cowley Street from Italy

I’m writing from Italy and I have seen on social media the pictures of habitat koala destruction in Cowley Street in Ormiston. It’s heartbreaking.

The poor koala is watching his trees destroyed. I’m shocked.

From afar I observe with disgust, sadness, frustration, anger, the destruction of koala habitat in your Country. Koalas in Queensland, NSW, Victoria are on a brink of extinction due to the excessive tree-clearing. They’ve nowhere to go.

Australia clears more land than just about every other country on the planet. Australia has one of the worse extinction records on Earth. It’s time for federal, national local laws that protect nature, and to strengthen koala habitat laws, before it’s gone.  Extinction is now!

Koalas died for no habitat, hits cars, dogs attacks, chlamydia.
After the devastating bushfires last summer, local, federal and  national governments are allowing clearing koala habitat everywhere. It’s immoral and not ethical.

The world is watching, and your governments can not allow the extinction of your native national icon!. Stop the over-development, please.

We need trees to live, to breath, we can not eat money! Australia has a unique environment, it needs protection not destruction! Sir David Attenborough says “The truth is the natural world is changing. It is the most precious thing we have and we need to defend it”.

I thank you for reading my letter.

Cowley Street is animal abuse!

It is with great dismay and sadness that I reviewed further destruction of the koala habitat in Redland City in the media.   THIS IS ANIMAL ABUSE & is frowned up by all levels of residents.

With public awareness via facebook/social media, news reports etc. how did anyone expect this catastrophe in Cowley St to not attract public outrage??

The silent majority of people and voters are aware of the influence of developers and Cowley Street is a glaring and very ugly result.

Lived in the Redlands for 35 years, paid my rates and now I WANT TO BE HEARD!

What about owners rights?

Cowley Street in Ormiston

The owners of the property in Cowley Street, Ormiston have been paying rates (& probably Land Tax) on their property for many years.

If Council or the State Government or other “Interested Parties” had the slightest interest in preserving the trees on the property, they could have moved to purchase or resume the area at any time.

Given that the land was subdivided before the 2nd World War into relatively small allotments, and given legal setbacks from buildings to trees, it is highly unlikely any trees would have survived development at any time, past or future.

Council urged buy Cowley Street land

Koala habitat clearing at Cowley Street Ormiston
Koala tree being destroyed at Cowley Street in Ormiston on 27 January 2021

I wish to express my strong concern about the removal of eucalypts that are part of an existing koala habitat in Cowley St, Ormiston.

The Redlands Coast Council claim to support wildlife in the Redlands and have used the koala as an icon in its logo. It further claims to have increased protections of koala habitat areas, yet in Cowley St, in Ormiston, a group of koalas are sitting in trees while neighbouring eucalypts are felled around them!

This block is used as a corridor by koalas to travel from one habitat to another, so if the remaining trees are felled when the koalas move from them, there will be no safe corridor any longer.

I urge the Redlands Council, in very strong terms, to negotiate with the owner/developer to buy this block in order to preserve the wildlife corridor and the koalas who live there.

Australia’s koala population suffered a mighty blow during and following the dreadful bushfires that occurred last year. Let’s not endanger them any further by removing their habitat and safe corridors!
