Redlands community concerns in letters to the editor

Whitewater objection

Instead of building a whitewater centre in Redlands, use the existing facility in Penrith NSW.
Penrith Whitewater Stadium in NSW

I object to the Redlands Whitewater Centre being built. We have one in NSW.

We don’t need the enormous cost of this.

I cannot believe that our Mayor would support this.

We didn’t vote for this kind of decision on our behalf.

Toondah highrise not needed

Having seen Toondah Harbour’s proposed apartments being stopped I am disappointed to see the development near Fernleigh is now on the cards with a proposal for 7 storeys.

Not as bad as the Toondah proposal but high rise still and it leans on the poor planning approach put in place by the disastrous PDA.

Do we really need this project and if so why?

I would have assumed that we have enough units in Cleveland and more units will surely add to congestion and stretch the capacity of the current infrastructure.

Cleveland has a lovely tourist friendly feel about it. Let’s not lose that but I am afraid, it is becoming tenuous.

Contemplating recent elections both outcomes and processes

Who really won the recent Queensland election?

That might depend on who you ask? A truthful answer ought not refer to a report card on each candidate. A democratic result should be assessed on the political options being offered to the electorate.

If ‘winners are grinners’, exactly who are contemporary ‘grinners’ in Queensland? This practice tends to reduce political objectives into very basic terms. Looking below the façade presented by current political parties, a somewhat murky view emerges.

Commentators often like presenting election results in different colours. Political parties, represented by a particular colour, don’t attract much attention on their political objectives.

In ancient Rome, traditional factions supporting various colours developed into fierce tribal loyalties. Riots could occur over which colour won a chariot race, requiring the Roman Army to be called out to enforce domestic harmony—at least what passed for domestic harmony in ancient Rome.

Are we therefore in danger of being cajoled into a coloured tribal allegiance? If so, where might that lead? An excellent example is the recent US election, where the tribal allegiances in the electorate have been bifurcated into a trivialised blue or a red slogan?

Australian elections have been described as the envy of many voters in the US. Various commentators, often have a difficult task of explaining why the US system of democracy is truly democratic. Yet the US election outcome will have a very serious influence on the future of the free world.

Democracy in decline

Another Christmas and another great time of the year for families and kids, that is, if you can afford it?

Many years ago a nephew of mine joined the police force and later commented to me about the poor quality of police training. The recent tasering of a 95-year-old woman, using a walker, by a police officer [in NSW], which resulted in her death, is indicative of the extremely poor standing of, not only police training but of, the police service and its members. It is a clear reflection that our extremely poorly understood values are in play and should be a matter of extreme national concern.

We continue with the present election system, that is still based on the Mates System and Promises instead of fully workable plans and goal. This should be a matter of grave concern to all as clearly, we are not learning.

Our education system is, dumbed down to a need-to-know basis and we are allowing Governments and even politicians to take total control of the school curriculum. Most obvious is the way the USA has resorted to book burning and the like to kill the message that politicians don’t like!

Our so-called, democracy is in decline and this is beyond comprehension! How can so many people be blind to the pending disaster that we are all part of making?

I am well into my senior years but I’d like to see more commentary and debate about these problems.
