Koala Action Group submission about 26-52 Kinross Road subdivision

The Koala Action Group (KAG) says it has “grave concerns’ about a proposed residential subdivision at 26-52 Kinross Road in Thornlands.

In its submission about the proposed development, KAG identifies the the following key issues:

  • Ecological Report was inadequate – no fauna assessment was completed, including presence of koalas (scats and scratches). The importance and role of paddock trees that are proposed to be removed was dismissed.  Koala Expert studies say otherwise – isolated paddock trees are recognised as being important stepping stones for koalas (and other wildlife) to move across landscapes, especially in an urban setting.
  • The proposal to construct housing in an Open Space corridor is completely unacceptable and will result in substantial narrowing of the East-West fauna movement corridor between Hilliards Creek and core koala habitat on Panorama Drive, Thornlands.  The reduction of what is currently a 100 metre wildlife corridor to 50 metres seriously compromises its ability to sustain larger habitat trees and for fauna to move safely without disturbance from domestic dogs etc.
  • The proposed filling in of the large dam to the west of the development is unnecessary and puts at risk surrounding vegetation, particularly mature eucalyptus trees that do not adapt well to changes in the water table.  A more acceptable outcome would be to add water retention basins that flow into the dam working with the natural topography of the land.
  • The loss of more than 450 non-juvenile koala trees will have a significant impact on koalas (a National Matter of Environmental Significance-MNES) and the project should be referred to the Federal Government for assessment under the EPBC Act.

The complete KAG submission (five pages) is published below.

  1. Local, state and federal governments have failed miserably in their so-called duty of care for these beloved Australian Icons. The only value that they have is raising billions in tourism dollars.
The world is watching with deep sadness.

    1. Sad Human Being

Mankind is so GREEDY and SELFISH!
How much more INJUSTICE will be done on INNOCENT WILDLIFE AND NATURE?

WE LOOK AT GETTING AHEAD BY PROVIDING HOUSES FOR US SELFISH HUMAN BEINGS, GETTING RICHER, KILLING ANIMAL HABITATS!! WHERE’S THE INSIGHT INYO OUR KARMA ??

WE LOOK AT LIFE ON OTHER PLANETS, WASTING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, YET WE CANNOT EVEN CARE FOR AND PROTECT OUR OWN EARTH, OUR OWN ANIMALS, OCEANS AND WATERWAYS.

WE WORRY ABOUT OUR OWN CHILDREN AND THEIR AFFORDABILITY OF HOUSING, YET WE KILL ALL ANIMALS AND THEIR CHILDREN AND THEIR FUTURE FOR OUR OWN SELFISHNESS AND GREED.
TODAY I FEEL DISGUSTED AND DISGRACED TO BE A HUMAN BEING.
      SO UNFORTUNATE IS HUMANITY!
      WE HAVE LOST ALL HUMILITY!!!

  2. Kinross Rd Family

As residents of the Kinross Rd development, we are currently seeking to build a family home; however, we oppose any development plans that lead to the destruction of natural habitats. We believe that Redlands City should prioritize infill developments or urban densifications, focusing on already developed land. This method is widely acknowledged as a more sustainable option compared to constructing on natural, agricultural, or undeveloped areas. By doing so, we can rejuvenate underused spaces while safeguarding ecosystems from harm.

  3. No more developement destroying our unique beautiful wildlife in the Redlands as an earlier resident of the Redlands I have seen the destruction of the Koala corridors that I was lead to believe by the Mayor in the 1980s stated that the corridors were to stay not just for Koalas but all wildlife in that particular corridor as far as I remember but unfortunately Councils are taken over and plans to preserve our wildlife (money and greed always win) unfortunately. Please show all Australians that the Redland Council care immensleyto keep this beautiful wildlife area for those that need to reside there, our unique beautiful and our Australian wildlife and vegetation , the Redlands need this to show all of Australia that The Redlands rules for caring for nature. PLEASE . Don’t let GREED RULE.

  4. I don’t mind my website being published I want to see my Grand Children and their Children see the beauty in everything in the once amazing Redlands Area , Corridors have to be protected no more destruction in such pristine areas.
