Letters to the Editor discuss the challenges of living on an island, protection of koala habitat, and the unpopular Redlands Whitewater Centre’s possible Olympic legacy.
There’s also a letter encouraging people to sign a petition asking Redland City Council to cease issuing parking infringement notices at the Redland Bay Marina parking precinct until the proposed Multi-Level Car Park is constructed and overflow parking issues are resolved for SMBI residents.
Letters to the editor are included in the free newsletters which Redlands2030 emails to thousands of subscribers.

Island life

Having been a resident of Macleay Island since 2001, whenever I am in a conversation about transport I ask when they moved to the Island. This determines my interaction with them.
If they arrived after 2006 it’s their problem. The problem existed way back then.
If they are elderly and bring health problems with them, they made a bad decision. Just look at the workload of the Island paramedics. I hate to be negative but these are facts that can’t be sugar-coated.
My medical issues started to affect me about 10 years ago and it is my responsibility to cope with them. I am 80 years of age.
What I have issues with, are the selfish residents abusing what we now have.

Kinross Road development application

It’s appalling to hear of the proposed development of 15 dwellings on land which is currently zoned Recreation and Open Space, at 26-52 Kinross Road.
How can this development possibly go ahead and be approved? It encroaches on a koala habitat which will ultimately, yet again, impact on koalas which continue to face dwindling numbers. This development must not go ahead.
I recall Sussan Ley, in February 2022, announcing koala populations need protection. Since then numbers have continued to dwindle. So how can this development even be considered?
Money making ahead of saving koalas? What a shameful legacy that would be.

Olympic legacy investment would cause budget pressure

The Redland Bayside News, January 29 had an article regarding Council’s tardy Olympic legacy; it was most illuminating.
Cr Colley admitted that Council’s budget cannot cope with further legacy investment – his words: “further investment would likely create short-term budget pressure, . . “ That sounds to me like code for either increased rates or taking funds from other much needed projects and/or maintenance.
How long is “short-term”? How much “pressure”? Where is the business case that quantifies the costs and benefits to the City?
This ‘legacy investment’ probably does not include costs associated with Council’s portion of the controversial Whitewater venue.
Also, Councillor Rendalls bemoaning of the fact that Council has “‘largely failed’ to take the community with it on the Olympic Journey” probably stems from the fact that 73% of Redlanders don’t want a bar of it (from Redland Bayside News’ own online poll).
Things are grim and getting grimmer.

Petition – Parking Infringement Notices at the Redland Bay Marina

I have a RCC e-petition asking Council to immediately cease issuing parking infringement notices at the Redland Bay Marina parking precinct until the proposed Multi-Level Car Park is constructed and overflow parking issues are resolved for SMBI residents.
The e-petition is predominantly about the Redland Bay Marina parking issues for SMBI residents and visitors. I now find from feedback that this is a much broader issue for North Stradbroke Island and Coochie Mudlo Island residents and visitors as well at mainland and island car parks. After receiving overwhelming support, we need as many signatures as possible before the deadline of Tuesday 10 February 2026.
Tell me your parking fine story in the comments below to help our case.
I will be making a 5 minute presentation to the 18 February 2026 RCC meeting on the community concerns and suggested solutions around Council planning and parking fine enforcement inconsistencies. More details to come.
