Traffic heading to and from Cleveland along Finucane Road

Cleveland traffic problems, ‘religious instruction’ at Redland City Council meetings and heartfelt questions about the proposed construction of 3,600 apartments next to Toondah Harbour are discussed in letters to Redlands2030.

Cleveland traffic – from bad to worse

Bumper to bumper Cleveland traffic heading to Brisbane City. You have to see it to believe it.

Not long ago we drove at six am to Cleveland and I was amazed and shocked to see the volume of Cleveland traffic.

Even if 3,600 units go ahead, who would buy them knowing the congestion will only get worse?

There should not be 3600 units built at Toondah Harbour and that’s not even looking at the damage to the habitats and the ecology.

Units at Toondah Harbour need to be put to rest. More plainly, such plans need to be killed off.

It’s a no-brainer!

Religious instruction but public excluded

I refer to the Redlands2030 Newsletter and to the report that the Redlands councillors will continue to benefit from some religious instruction notwithstanding the public being excluded from the general meetings.

It could be an excellent time for those conducting the ‘religious instruction’ to seek some guidance from St Matthew – for example:

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. (Matthew 23:14)

Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. (Matthew 23:26)

Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. (Matthew 23:28)

Also, this warning about skeletons in cupboards:

Alas, alas you lawyers and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You are like tombs covered in whitewash: they look well from the outside, but they are full of dead men’s bones…. (Matthew 23:27).

I pray these references may provide some inspiration and help in this rather trying time, some of us ratepayers seem to be experiencing.

Six questions about Toondah

When we experience the unique soul-restoring beauty and peace of G.J. Walter Park, and contemplate its surrounding land being freely given to an out-of-state developer to build highrise buildings containing 3,600 units, shouldn’t we ask some questions?

1. When will the Walker Group’s advertisements show the reality of the massive ugly skyline and pollution of the ocean and coastline?

2. Why is the State Government’s actual agreement with this powerful developer being withheld from the knowledge of Redlanders?

3. Why have Redlands City councillors been threatened with loss of position if they discuss this huge development with their Redlands electorates? What kind of democracy stops the people’s representatives from being open and honest with the people?

4. Has money been given by the Walker Group to anyone in government who is part of the decision making process on the development, as political campaign support or otherwise?

5. Do we want the peaceful beauty of this area to become a construction site for many years?

6. Are temporary jobs worth permanent damage?

If any citizens of the Redland City are feeling hot please recognize the problem rests with the Council that have turned a delightful rural community into a sardine city . The closely packed houses act as heat sinks and have significantly increased the temperature of our environment. Leafy gardens with cooling trees helped to protect the community from excessive heat. Such trees protected and preserved our wildlife. I hope the religious instruction included prayers for children as they will find themselves playing on the street as gardens are sacrificed to the gods of the so called developer! Street children lead to the development of increased crime and road congestion will multiply like the plague!
Why should residents be expected to fund multi-million dollar companies so that they can destroy the very environment we all enjoy with 3600 units against the wishes of citizens. Unfortunately this is clearly the Directive of the State Government in olaboration with the Council.

It seems to me that our Councillors should call on the inspiration from on high about who they work for. In the face of the erosion of democratic principles and practices the RCC decision to close off public participation but retain religious instruction is putting the wrong priority on both measures. It might be that guidance might have to come from the religious representatives…Popo’s is a good letter. More, please!

Totally agree. Religion has no place in Federal, State or Local government.
